When can we leave?

I was reading the blog Elements of Style and Erin Gates posted that the villa from “Under the Tuscan Sun” has been renovated and is up for rent. Not only is that one of my favorite movies, but I’ve had a total crush on that house since I first laid eyes on it! Anyway, this led me to check out the rental site (Italianvillas.com) and I have been drooling over all the properties. Not only would renting one of these properties be an amazing trip, some of the houses are really well decorated and the pics make for some great inspiration!

While I’m chasing Oliver around the house trying to entertain him on this rainy day, I’ll be mentally booking my trip to Tuscany where the most pressing issue of the day will be which wine to pair with our delicious dinner al fresco… one day right? ;)

I signed up for Pinterest awhile ago but finally started pinning the other night and it’s totally addicting! I’m always saving pics of my favorite spaces from the web and now and this makes it so much easier to both collect pictures and organize them. I highly recommend it! Inspiring Closets

The natural light, the floor length mirrors, the subtle pops of colors, egh I have complete closet envy. As you know I’ve been purging and organizing and while I don’t have the closet the size of most bedrooms ( I mean really who does?) maybe one day it’ll happen. Until then, it’s still fun to look.

Bringing me back down to reality, this is a great article from Real Simple with 31 practical ways to makeover your closets. Some of my favorites include mounting a peg board for small accessories:

And using slimming hangers to save space (they really work, these are great from the Container Store).

I’ll get going on those practical solutions but I can still dream that one day I’ll have a space big enough for art and a fun vintage chair for when I’m just too exhausted from dressing myself.

What makes a blog worth reading?

Joe and I headed to Napa this weekend (sans the little man) for a much needed getaway and it was fantastic! Given all our new found downtime, I was able to peruse some fashion mags that I haven’t read in months (looks like I need to invest in some polka dots and novelty knits for fall :)

What struck me most, other than the over the top mode, were the constant references to bloggers. For what even I thought would be a passing fad, blogging and tweets have truly made their mark on the publishing industry.

Which leads me to the all important question, what makes a blog worth reading? Original content to be sure, but it seems like it takes more than that given all that’s out there. Look at the cult phenomenon blog atlantic-pacific:

It’s such a simple concept- take beautiful pics of what you wear each day. Now, it’s more than that because Blair Eadie has a true talent in styling and such a strong POV in each of her ensembles (plus I love that she’s in SF!) So even despite atlantic-pacific’s simplicity, I visit her blog daily and am inspired by each of her outfits.

Matchbook

I might be a little late to this considering they’re on Issue 7 but I’m loving the online magazine Matchbook! The spreads are vibrant, the products are cheerful and their interviews are with interesting creatives like Michelle Smith creator of the Milly fashion line (Love!!).

After many requests, I’ve finally figured out how to allow email subscriptions to this blog (hey, I never claimed to be tech savvy:) So, I know you’re all dying to subscribe and get up to the minute updates on what I’m writing about. Unhappy Hipsters

I came across the blog Unhappy Hipsters this morning and had to share. It features beautiful photos coupled with snarky comments that are reminiscent of the narrative in “500 Days of Summer” (I know, probably so unhipster to reference that movie, but I figured it was more pathetic to try and reference something obscure that I’d obviously never seen). Anyway, take a peak because I think it’s a refreshingly original blog!

A Brooklyn Loft Transformed on a Budget

I came across this NY Times article today and just thought it would be fun to pass along. It’s a great interactive piece featuring the transformation of a Brooklyn loft using a $5k budget. I love the mix of vintage pieces with inexpensive options. I also think this is a fabulous example of how important space planning is. Take a peak at the before pics and you’ll see what a difference the new layout makes!

The $300 Makeover (At Least That Was the Goal)

This isn’t specifically product related, but an article came out in the Times a few weeks ago that I’ve been meaning to share with you! “The $300 Makeover (At Least That Was the Goal)” details how five designers were given $300 to complete room makeovers for five New Yorkers. While only one of them was able to come in under $300, the rest managed to stay pretty close to the budget.

Why do I think this is so important, one might ask? It’s because this article really hits home what I’m trying to do with my company Starter Stylist. It’s so important to be happy and comfortable in your home and people tend to think it can’t be done cheaply or it’s not worth the time or money. But just with some paint, cleaning your room, rearranging your furniture or refinishing existing pieces one can easily freshen up a space, which I promise freshens up your mood! Check out this short video from the article for some good tips. You really can create a beautiful space on a budget.

Take a peak, it’s a good read plus before and after pics are always a good distraction from work!
