Two great interviews in this month’s Matchbook! The first is an interview with fashion designer Jules Reid. Not sure I could pull off her clothes, but I love that she made her transition into fashion when she was 40 (with 3 kids no less!) Very inspirational and such a good reminder that it’s never too late to pursue something you love. Plus, her house decor is super fun.

The second interview is with Jonathan Adler, one of my absolute favorites. His stuff can be crazy but he truly embodies his motto of happy chic and I would love to work in his office!! Enjoy!

My must-haves

In keeping with the happiness project, I purged my closet this morning and got rid of a ton of stuff. Oliver wasn’t as thrilled with the process but managed to entertain himself trying to break some electronics just long enough for me to work.

While it felt great to give things away, it was slightly depressing to see how many clothes I’ve accumulated that I don’t ever wear and realize how much money I’ve wasted over the years. I did notice however that the majority of the pieces I gave away were things that I bought because I thought they were a good deal not because they were things I needed or even really wanted. These ended up being the pieces that I’d wear once and then forget about. This was an aha moment for me although I’m sure most of you are thinking ya duh (and yes I did just say duh, I’ve been up since 4:45 my vocab is lacking).

This got me thinking about the pieces that have been well worth the investment. Right on the top of that list is my Frye boots that I’ve had for at least 5 years and have gotten me through a couple NY winters to boot (pun intended… 4:45 folks) They were pricey but I wear them constantly! It’s also worth spending money on jeans because I wear them everyday as part of my mom uniform whether I like it or not. These Hudson ones are great in the summer. Also sweatshirts from J. Crew. They’re comfy and feel slightly nicer than your typical pullover.

Edition by Banana Republic

Following a friend’s recommendation I finally made it over to the new Edition by Banana Republic store in the SF Mall. Now I shouldn’t have been surprised (because this suggestion was coming from a very stylish friend) but this store is fabulous! Edition is a new concept from BR and carries only limited edition jewelry, handbags, shoes and hair accessories. Everything in the store is moderately priced (jewelry from about $20 – $100), well crafted and on trend. I picked up an awesome cocktail ring for $40 and really want to go back for that tassel necklace (pictured above).

The downside is as of now there’s only one store and most of their items I didn’t see online. So if you’re in SF check this store out. According to the sales person, they get new merchandise every 1-2 months so come Christmas/Hanukkah (whatever you celebrate!) this will be the perfect place for gifts and accessories for your holiday party outfits!

A New Vintage

I love these vintage cuffs designed by Ann Ziebell. Ziebell is a former antiques dealer turned costume jewelry designer. Her line features pieces created from Art Deco brooches, buckles and fur clips. I love the combination of the vintage brooch with the modern heavy metal chain, which give the pieces some edge. These cuffs would look fabulous for going out or just dressing up a simple pair a jeans.

Drink

There’s nothing new about Pimm’s Cup but in my opinion its one of the best summer drinks! It is refreshing and light enough to sip on all day. There are many different recipes, but this one from Martha Stewart looks delicious. It has more fruit than some of the others I’ve tried so if you don’t have all those ingredients some Pimm’s, 7up and lemonade should do the trick! Pimm’s is also good just on the rocks, which you might resort to after you have a few :)

The Clay Pot

To all of you back east, this might be old hat, but I recently discovered the Park Slope jewelry store The Clay Pot and was so impressed by their collection! Their stock ranges from designer to trendy pieces and their site is easy to navigate, which is important for those of us who don’t have a Brooklyn trip planned anytime soon. My jewelry style errors on the more conservative side and my picks above definitely reflect that. Another Guilty Obsession… this is getting to be a problem

I’m sure it comes as no surprise by now that I love a good deal and am always looking for them! I recently discovered ideeli.com and had to share. They’re similar to Gilt Groupe in that they have daily sales on designer brands that are super marked down around 50-60 percent off, however unlike Gilt there’s no set sale start time (you’re notified by email when they begin), the sales are timed, but don’t end until the product is completely sold out and the final difference (and I think the most fun) is that they have giveaways from designers like Vera Wang and Oscar de la Renta (this week they’re giving away an awesome yellow clutch from Roger Vivier, which I’m definitely going to get in on). The Lazy Girl’s Accessory

While scarves might be a played out trend or are not always practical (as was so eloquently pointed out on stuffwhitepeoplelike.com) I still love them and am completely addicted. I mean how can you not like something that instantly improves a t-shirt and jeans? It is truly the lazy girl’s accessory, hence the reason it’s my go to look. That’s why when I came across these Epice scarves from Bird I had to share. They are made of linen so they’re nice and lightweight for summer plus I just love how cheerful the colors are! So while some might argue scarves are out, I’m definitely an advocate of perpetuating the trend!
