I was recently introduced to this amazing company that not only creates beautiful pillows, they are also eco-friendly and socially conscious. One Thread Fair Trade is a LA based company that works to train villages of women in South India in textile arts and they in turn create the cushions, which are designed by company founder Mayura Kona. Through their work, the women — who were mostly victim to poverty and domestic violence– are now able to provide for their families, educate their children, and really transform the role of the women in  rural society. Each cushion actually comes with a hand-signed tag with the name of the woman that tailored the product and what she believes in (pictured below).

I’m loving this company not only because of their beautiful designs, but because of their mission. I was completely enthralled with the women’s stories in the Artisans section of the website (if you have a moment try to read some of them). It is remarkable that they have overcome so many obstacles and their stories are an important reminder of the poverty and abuse that exists all over the world. 

Additionally, I spoke with Mayura regarding the collection and her inspiration. The inspiration behind the launch line was leaves (designs pictured above) and she plans to create collections for both Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer so stay tuned for new designs! Until then, I think the above designs are stunning. I love the bold use of color and strong lines. They feel very contemporary and would make a great accent in a living or sitting room. My favorite is “Pods”, which is the first pillow of each row.

Anyway, I’m excited to keep an eye on One Thread Fair Trade. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing great things from this company in the upcoming seasons.

Yesterday, the NY Times ran an article and wonderful slideshow presentation featuring the works of Brazilian landscape designer, painter and all around artist, Roberto Marx. Marx was the first to truly create tropical gardens in Brazil. He was also a painter, set, costume and jewelry designer. His work will be featured at the Paço Imperial museum until March and then travels to São Paulo.

What really caught my eye are the above street murals that grace the sidewalks of Copacabana beach in Rio. Isn’t it just a beautiful design? I’ll admit, when I saw the thumbnail picture of it I thought the pattern was wallpaper and got really excited ( I probably shouldn’t admit that). While I was a little disappointed about the wallpaper thing, I did decide where to go on my next vacation. Art on beach sidewalks … who could pass that up?! I’ve decided that Wednesday’s are going to be my Designer Spotlight day (I’m sure you’re very excited, waiting with baited breath for my first pick!). So, without further ado today’s pick is Angela Adams! I met Angela earlier this year at a Design Within Reach event at which she was introducing her new line of couture rugs (they are stunning btw). I was not only taken back by the beauty and fun retro feel of her work, but by how genuine and down to earth she was. She’s done an amazing job expanding her brand and has made excellent licensing decisions (for example her tile line for Ann Sacks pictured above). 

Angela is from a small island off the coast of Maine and draws all her inspiration from the nature around her (during her presentation she showed us her inspiration pictures next to the final pieces and the similarities were remarkable). This organic and honest approach to design gives her work a truly timeless quality. Some of her prices are on the more expensive side (for example her rugs) but I think they’re fair for the quality of work you’re getting.

As I mentioned above, her line is extensive and she’s applied her designs to couture rugs, tile, contract fabrics, handbags, glassware, pillows, art prints and stationery products to name a few. Take a peak at her work at www.angelaadams.com and I promise you won’t be disappointed!
