The Green Depot
April 9th, 2009 § 1 Comment

The Times ran an article about this a couple days ago so I’m sure there will be many blogs talking about it, but I figured one more can’t hurt! The Green Depot just opened a new showroom on Bowery in New York. I’ve been exploring their website this morning and wish I had found this company earlier!
Background (taken from the Times article):
“Sarah Beatty, Green Depot’s founder, is a longtime New Yorker who worked as a marketing executive at MTV in the early ’90s and later at Cable USA. When she became pregnant in 2004, she learned that her home might be contaminated with black mold. “That got me going on the Internet,” she told me on the phone. Like a lot of us, she fell into a Google-hole and became obsessed.
She opened a Green Depot Build store in Brooklyn in 2005. In the beginning, the venture was meant for commercial builders. “But the first year, 50 percent of traffic were homeowners, mothers with their kids, young couples,” she said. Now there are six Build stores, with another two on the way. The Bowery store is the first geared to consumers and environmental living.”
My Experience:
It’s times like these that I really miss living in New York. Unfortunately, due to location my experience has been purely virtual, but I’ve definitely enjoyed perusing the website. While I’m impressed with their selection of cleaning products and home care options, I’ve really loved their home accessories and baby products.
I included pics of my favorites above (from top left):
Green Depot Baby Colorways $4.95-$44.95 These are zero-VOC paints that make perfect nursery colors. Overall I was impressed by their “Build-A-Nursery” selection, which includes furniture, bedding, lighting and paints.
Natural Solutions Cleaning Kit $34.95 Not only is this great for yourself, but would make a fun gift! Check out all of their “kits” here
Sprout Creation Vers 2x Sound System $179.95 Each of these sound docks are finished by hand and made from responsibly harvested wood and bamboo, which is wonderful but personally I just really loved the way it looks!
EGG Organic 4 Piece Crib Set $350 Super cute organic cotton baby bedding, what more can I say?
John Beck Chalkboard Pendant $175-$295 Who knew I was so into chalk products? I think this pendant light is so fun. They suggest using it for a nursery or child’s room, but I really think it would be a great accent piece anywhere in the home. Just depends on what you write on it!
Ok, there’s so much to see on the site. Just take a look, The Green Depot is a wonderful resource, making it easier for the everyday person to go green!

Nicole Grey & Company

This is a great shop for all of you in the Bay Area! I stopped in Nicole Grey & Co. a couple weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised by their collection of home decor and accessories. They’re located in Marin’s Strawberry Village and their products definitely fall more into the French country look. They carry designers such as Juliska (they have a lot of Juliska’s ‘jardin du monde’ collection and have a few pieces of the ‘black glassware’ that I love so much) and home scents from Antica Farmacista (my favorite scent from this collection is ‘vanilla bourbon and mandarin’ and I’ve even been able to convince Joe to like it because of the ‘bourbon notes’ :) They also have a large stock of fake flowers that are of good quality and a great selection of fun coffee table books.
Unfortunately, their website is under construction. Hopefully it will be done soon so all of you not in the Bay Area can take a look!

The Clay Pot

To all of you back east, this might be old hat, but I recently discovered the Park Slope jewelry store The Clay Pot and was so impressed by their collection! Their stock ranges from designer to trendy pieces and their site is easy to navigate, which is important for those of us who don’t have a Brooklyn trip planned anytime soon. My jewelry style errors on the more conservative side and my picks above definitely reflect that. But The Clay Pot also has a large selection of funkier, trendier pieces as well as options between the under $50-$100 range so don’t let my selection deter you!
